Zamtel is a state-owned mobile network operator and telecommunications service provider in Zambia.

The company was founded in 1994 following the privatisation and breakup of the Post and Telecommunications Corporation (itself a history dating to 1913) into separate postal and telecommunications entities, Zampost and Zamtel respectively. In 2010 75% of the company was sold to Libyan-owned LAP Green Networks, however due to irregularities the sale was reversed and the company re-nationalised in 2011.

Actually, the Sole Shareholder Of The Company Is The Government Of The Republic Of Zambia. The Company Falls Under The Jurisdiction Of The Ministry Of Transport, Works, Supply And Communications Pursuant To Gazette Notice No. 183 Of 2012 And The Statutory Functions Act Chapter 4 Of The Laws Of Zambia.

The company provides 2G GSM services over the 900 MHz band, and began its 3G UMTS B1 (2100 MHz) network in April 2012 with HSPA+ data services. 4G LTE was launched in January 2014 over B40 (2300 MHz). Zamtel announced it was upgraded the network to LTE-A (4.5G) in November 2017, providing peak data rates of up to 240 Mbps.
